Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

How do I search for legislation on Westlaw?

Our answer:

As an example, try searching on Westlaw for the Outer Space Act (1986). After logging into Westlaw, select "Legislation", then "Legislation search" from the menu across the top of the homepage. If you wanted to view (or print) the whole Act, type outer space act in the "Title" box then click on "Search". Notice that you retrieve not only the Act itself but also approximately Statutory Instruments relating to this Act. To view the full text of the Act or SI click title link from the results, and you will be directed to the "Arrangement of the Act". Notice also that each Act of Parliament is given a chapter number. The Outer Space Act is chapter 38 for 1986.

Please note, however, that you can also search for a specific section of an Act. In this example, imagine that you only wanted to see section 8 of the Outer Space Act 1986. Return to the search screen by selecting "search results", and then "edit search" at the top right of the page.  This time, in the "Title" search box, type outer space act, and in the Provision Number drop down menu select section, and type 8 in the box next to it. You will see that Westlaw retrieves only section 8 of the Act. To display the full text of section 8 select the highlighted s. 8 link.
