Managing, referencing and using information sources

This page explains how to use RefWorks to manage and organise search results, how to reference sources and how to use information sources ethically and legally.

Managing information

When you are carrying out research in the Library you will find it useful to keep track of the sources you find so that you can refer to them later. The Library provides a Reference Management System called RefWorks that will help you do this.

Referencing

An essential part of academic writing is acknowledging the sources that you have consulted. This is called citing references. You will need to make sure you are consistent in the way you do this.

Our Referencing Guide explains how to do this using the most commonly used referencing systems used in our distance learning programmes.

Using information

Information is protected by copyright, which gives authors and publishers the legal right to control how their work is used. See our Copyright Guide for guidance on how to use information sources while respecting copyright.

You may encounter Artificial Intelligence (AI) when using information sources. Our Artificial Intelligence Guide provides some advice on how to navigate your use of AI.
